Do One Thing: A Poem

These are the days when we feel helpless in a different way than when the pandemic was at its height and we are scared of other threats, other rhetoric. I lead a small but beloved life in rural Nova Scotia, isolated from friends and community but that isolation also protects me from the greater threats. But I can't be still, I can't remain silent so I use my art, my voice to put some positive energy into the world to counter the hate, the lies, the conspiracies, the utter nonsense.

I published this poem last Monday, as a video, on my Facebook page, but here it is, a poem about love, for Valentine's Day.

DO ONE THING

What do we do when
hate
is grinning
because it’s winning?

when
hostility
and harassment
aggression
and ignorance
shout down the other voices

when
cruelty
laughs
and taunts
pushes
and shoves
to the ground
spits on the other people

What do we do when
hate
is smirking
because it’s working?

when
those who are poor
and hungry
crying
and dying
insulted
and persecuted
elderly
and orderly
when those who do
kindness and mercy and justice
are mocked
and intimidated
and terrorized

What do we do when
hate
is the stronger
fearmonger?

We love
harder
We love
louder
We love
wider
We love
like we mean it
like we are mean
and angry
and passionate
and emboldened
and courageous

We love
like we aren’t going to take it any longer
like we are going to love so much stronger
like there is no end to love

We love
relentlessly
aggressively
fearlessly
wisely

We don’t negotiate
we don’t compromise
we don’t give in
we don’t give up

We don’t stop
loving

What do we do when
love
seems like it’s down for the count?
We don’t stop counting
we don’t stop
loving

We don’t stop
doing

Do something
one thing
that is loving
and caring
and appreciating
and upholding

Do something
one thing
that upholds the law of love
that elevates
unity
above
anti-
and -ism

Do something
one thing
that wipes the grin off the face of hate
as it watches love
prevail
as it derails

because love never fails
